Hello all, so I have had some awesome questions come in and thought I would put them out there for the general population =)
Why is the age cap 130 and what does that look like? The age cap was put in place as a fail safe to prevent the advantages of immortality. It works as a sort of refresh system, keeping all the numbers and the roles where they need to be.
130 looks like 110, 80, 40, etc. One a person reaches maturity (at somewhere between 25-35) they essentially stop aging. 129 year old wouldn't really have any physical differences from any other mature adult.
What year is it and how long as the society been established? This whole thing takes place somewhere around the year 2300. The practice of genetically altering humans has occurred for around 250 years, and has been "perfected" for about 100 years.
How much does the society censor information and how much of the past are people able to know? History is wide open for study, and there isn't much information that is off limits to anyone. There are security clearances within each department for safety's sake, but no one is trying to keep the general public in the dark.
How advanced is technology? Pretty advanced but not exceedingly so. There are no teleporters, no human cities on other planets, nothing too star trek. Everything is pretty self sustainable, but when everything shuts down there will be systems and stuff offline. I'll do my best to make this clear in my first addition.
Is Aureus a city or a planet? Aureus is the name of the collective group of humanity...kinda. It's Earth in the future. The countries sort of melded together and formed one unified group called Aureus. The primary city where this all takes place is just referred to as the Capital.
What happened to ethnicity? Are there still different races/skin colors etc? There are differences but they are much less distinct.
If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask =)

=) thanks.
I am hoping to have the first post up by the weekend. If all of you lovely people involved would be willing to send me your bio block(or a basic overview of your character)in the next few days that would be awesome. I want to make sure to not introduce any other characters within the 500 survivors that are too similar.

And I wrote you a book, as per usual.
I did inform Kat of this fact, but Harrison is meant to look like a Chris Pine who dresses a little like Matt Smith's Doctor and cannot sit still at all. So, you can see how he would be considered good looking, but people might not notice it because of how he carries himself and behaves.
So...ridiculously nerdy Captain Kirk. Yes.

How are the bio's coming? Anything I can do to help?

So just for info I switched the timing around a bit. Everyone died in 1 day instead of 7, so it's day 1 when the story starts. A little more chaos that way....sweet, sweet chaos =)
How's the bio coming Beast?

Ooo, chaos. Harrison will react...well. Actually, he might not even notice; he'll be in a library most of the time, probably.

People just explode into dust?
|
|
|
Post by kat1147 on Sept 11, 2013 14:06:32 GMT -6
Yep =) But not all the time. Only when they "Expire" on their 130th bday do they turn to dust because they are, for lack of a better word, programed to do so. If they die any other way there is still a body to be studied and all that. It's our first hint that there is something wrong with the genes as opposed to just a mass contagion or something.

You know, I've come to the conclusion that I don't much like this society. Literally, when you're 129 and 364 days, you spend the day knowing you're going to die the next day. And then you explode into dust. No thank you.
Also, I've quite decided that Harrison's suite of rooms at his University are like a throwback lounge. He has the computers, but he does a lot of things on his own. And I think he has the tools/know-how to hunt and whatnot, as history should ALWAYS lead someone to believe that everything will go balls up at some point.

I know it's totally a corruption of everything we think of as good. That's why I made the society the way it is, because I thinks it's fascinating to deal with situations so completely against what we believe is good but still functional and important to those in it.
In one addition I'll have someone hit their 130th and deal with how the society as a whole thinks of it. I am picturing a sort of beautiful mourning and sad acceptance. I always love to study how societies deal with death, I think it gives a really interesting insight into the culture as a whole.

I feel like Harrison might be the male Ariel. He has this ridiculous collection of shit that everyone else will be like "Why the hell do you keep these artifacts?!" and then this happens and he'll get to shout "Booyah!" at everyone and laugh maniacally.
Also, he'll know what everything is, so no brushing one's hair with a fork...as much as that would amuse him to do.

So, just a heads up, I am planning on being pretty strict with the 10 day addition time. I just hate when campfires die out and I am determined not to let that happen with this one. Of course crap comes up, but I am hoping that will be a matter of rearranging turns a bit instead of just waiting and waiting.

Oh, also Quaddy, keep in mind Harrison will have limited space. They are a very densely populated area (think Tokyo) so even the university would be given only so much room for their goodies. But fear not, I am sure there are museums and such to raid for handy gadgets, but they probably would not be readily available to any one person or organization.
He would also have a number of interns/colleagues before the ordeal, so them going poof would give him a good idea that something wasn't quite right.
I think in a lot of ways it is a hugely community driven culture. There would be little emphasis on individual achievement beyond it making you a better member of society. This will be one of the fun things to touch on as we go, they go from being part of a huge system to being individuals essentially without the clear purpose they were born with. It would probably be pretty disconcerting.
