OK. A long time ago (no, not in a galaxy far, far away), the human peoples were one. And they all worshiped the Gods together and in the same way. One group, however, turned to evil deeds, thievery, murder, etc. And so they were punished by the Gods, cast out of their presence and into the valleys below. In doing so, they transformed, becoming bestial and savage. The rest of humanity--those that remained righteous--were raised up and given a city amongst the Gods themselves. These are called the Blessed Ones, and the others are the Fallen Ones.
Much time has passed since then, but the Gods continue their prejudice against the one-time blasphemers of the Fallen, and their bias toward the once-righteous Blessed. So much so that society amongst the Blessed had come to include regular Hunts down into the valleys to destroy the Fallen and, further, that any sort of birth defect is seen as the Gods' curse. Thing is, the Fallen are not so wicked and the Blessed not so righteous as they once were. In fact, Blessed society has become a stranglehold. Their worship has become a thing of public reputation rather than real devotion. They believe themselves righteous because they pray and tithe and are dutiful to the Gods' wishes, but any real devotion is merely to the social morays of the time. And the Fallen live good lives, full of reverence for the Gods that turned away so long ago.
Now, there are two sets of Gods. The Old Gods, also called the Bright Gods, who make up the Gods' Council. These are the ones that cast judgement upon the Fallen in the first place. There is also the Death God, who is rather reviled by the Brights and blamed for all bad things even though he's a pretty decent guy, and he is also an Old God. Since the time of the Fall, a newer generation has come about who are much less loved and respected, especially by the Sky God (the King of Gods). Some are newer incarnations of beings that already exist (there is a God of Justice, but Mahrya/Marhya is also a Goddess of Justice, making her a double so to speak), others are like Hyamar, who just don't fit it. The Death God, while an Old God, prefers to chill with these new Gods.
Basically, these new Gods are tired of the stranglehold the Sky God and his cabal have over humanity. They refuse to change, they refuse to acknowledge their role in the worshiper/worshiped relationship, and have basically forgotten their debt to humanity. As such, they seek to overthrow the Old Gods and establish a new order. Thus, they go among the people--Fallen and Blessed--and pick one who will serve their needs and, together with their pet projects, will attempt to overthrow the Bright Gods.
So, yes, you would write for two characters. Your main character would be the human, but you would also be responsible for a God. We would also all share the onus of writing for the Gods together, but you would get to choose the God paired with your character. So far there are two who have not been taken, but I need to come up with at least three more to cover everyone...
I have not decided if the New Gods will give up the role of being worshiped and leave humanity alone and free from Gods entirely, or simply create a new relationship with humanity that involves a two-way street of responsibility.
