When creating or participating in a campfire, what is best to go with? Fanfiction type or something original?

I do prefer original, but there is something about fanfiction that I like as well especially for those shows, or books that end abruptly, or just doesn't go the direction you expected.

I have been in a few fanfiction campfires also, but they were mostly about sticking original characters in the book/show world. That is different, I think. Then the world and rules are already established. But when it comes to writing about the characters in the story- no thank you. I don't understand the want or desire to do that.

I do enjoy writing for an original character thrust in the established world though.
