Think of Merrow lifetimes as tolkien elves.
The Upper class of Merrow is a lot like mid-evil England. the nobles being the knightly warriors and all. Middle class and lower can be soldiers but would have to do some great things to excel there class. There is little feud about it though because even lower class citizens live in relative comforts.
Most upper class Merrow that travel into the stars are high ranking officials of some sort, ambassadors and the like.
Even though they are a very warrior tradition race they are beyond pleased to have met another race. (they have met the Hrist but the relationship between the two races is fragile at best)
any more specific questions?

hmmm...
Merrow Age Ranges:
0-50 = Child 51-100 = Teen 101-300 = Young Adult 301-700 = Adult 701-2000 = Elderly
Most Merrow don't live past 1300 though. But their bodies mature extremely slowly and they are very carefree and playful by nature so think dolphins lol.
They get about 200 years to just play. Then warrior's training begins though play is never abandoned. They aren't considered adults until they go through the harrowing aka ritual of manhood in human terms. If they fail the harrowing... that generally means they died, lol, or they ran and as such become exiles.

So then they are just like humans just with flippers.

lawls. And their societies are mobile and revolve around trades of the sea. They are space age advanced but they are very traditional people too so make sure you portray that balance, or inbalance in your character. Perhaps your character dislikes the space age or perhaps they'd like to leave the oceans behind.

What's the trouble? Your character can be whoever you wish, they just have to deal with the society they live in.

But they're like human but not like human. And they live on a planet of water and like to swim and play but they're a warrior people but they don't put too much into the warrior-ing. And they're advanced and swim but they shop and do things like humans but aren't like humans.
I don't know what to do with that.

And they're advanced and swim but they shop and do things like humans but aren't like humans. I don't know what to do with that. Okay. They are like humans, they have families, societies, games, jobs. They are generally lovers of water, though most have likely taken this love for granted. Their culture revolves around honor and strength. Warriorship is like citizenship. The better warrior you are the higher your class generally is. They all are trained to fight but they are all individuals, each with their own likes and dislikes. They have hobbies and hobbies lead to demand and demand leads to jobs. They have cities under the water made from a plethora of materials depending on the planet. These cities are mobile. They are space-faring but stay close to home due to the need for the waters. They live for hundreds of years and have minimal birthrates. Every sentient race has jobs and culture, Mynt. A space aring race wouldn't just be tribalistic swimming merpeople even if they hold onto their ancient traditions with pride.

I didn't say they would be. I just don't understand what your vision is. And even tribal people have jobs, culture and specialties...

true, so what is it about them that you are confused about? Is it the generalities I've been giving because i want your character to be yours and not mine?
Perhaps she is a rich girl from a good family and is really interested in the humans? perhaps her family lost it's status due to a coward in the family and she wants to redeem her family name and goes to join the defense core of the humans against Hrist raids?

I understand that. But I'm unclear about the species itself. How did they develop the ability to fly through space if they are all underwater? What kind of technology would they have if they are technologically advanced but live underwater?

Crystalis and water structuring. They can manipulate water molecules, able to harness it for both energy production and material use. They can make solid water (not ice) they can make bubble enclosures that can withstand the vacuum of space.
the possibilities are endless.
