So, I restarted it! YAY! Um...can everyone accept their invites?
Beast, I might have to resend yours 'cause I think the system messed up.
Matt, did you want to play Jonny, or did you want to try something else out?

Did you have to send it twice?

I did. I resent your invite and then you accepted, so I assume you just didn't get the first one.
The system is weird sometimes.

Weird indeed. I wonder how many times it's done that to me in the past... People never accepting or declining my invites...

Did Lonewolf ever get a hold of you? I wanted to spend November kind of planning where we wanted to go with it, especially since I'll need something to do with myself besides NaNo or I'll go insane...

So, the forum is back up and we're closing in on the end of NaNo (AND THE BEGINNING OF CAMPFIRES!!!!), so I am posting that e-mail I sent to everyone here in the forum. These are the language and reference links for In Service to the Crown. Now that NaNo is winding down and I am so very ready to write something other than Eve, I thought I'd send out the list of Victorian slang and Steampunk references that seems to accompany this campfire in all its variations. Most of you have seen these, but I figured that you've probably not saved them to your computer or anything, so... THE LIST! Here is some Victorian street slang, suitable for all characters except maybe Abraham. Even Zeke can use them, but he really only does so when he's passing as a member of the lower classes. Everyone else is suitably lower class enough to fall into the street slang category. www.tlucretius.net/Sophie/Castle/victorian_slang.htmlUpper class, "proper" speech. For the use of Zeke and Charlie, mostly, but also for when writing for characters of the upper classes. www.tlucretius.net/Sophie/Castle/proper.htmlFor Abraham (though the twins might have picked up a thing or two in their time in America), here is a list of Civil War-era slang. The war was only ten years before this campfire, so it would not have changed much. freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~poindexterfamily/CivilWar.html... For Steampunk references... www.steampunk.com/what-is-steampunk/thesteampunkhowto.com/what-is-steampunk/AAAAAND, of course, the Wikipedia page. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SteampunkGoogle images helps a lot, too, as I've discovered a visual is always important. Here is one more link on Victorian England... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_era

There are so many funny bits. I love that Nebuchadnezzar is slang for the penis...
And, yes, this campfire. I give you free reign to make Zeke as flamingly gay or bi as you want. I mean...keep in mind that this is Victorian England, so he might want to keep it slightly under wraps. Or just convince everyone he's a dandy. That should be fun.
I took away Izzy's little crush on him. She is a little less prone to girly crushes this time. More OK with being a woman, but still more comfortable with the freedoms that pretending to be a man affords. And the relationship between her and Jonny is a lot stronger. I think that, even if Zeke were attracted to her, he would be a little frightened by a big mechanical dude who guards her like an overzealous big brother.
I dunno--this is up to Matt, of course--but there could be a little bit of a, "Bitches, back off. She's mine." sort of thing. I mean, it's up to Matt why Jonny threw himself on a bomb to save his brand new partner. We're talking within a couple of weeks of being on the streets. Is he just that good a guy? Protecting the lady is chivalrous? He really, really likes her? Whichever. But I think, in doing that for her, it sort of became clear that, even if these two never actually became a couple, Izzy is totally Jonny's.
I'm playing up the fact that Izzy is the only person who still sees Jonny as a man, but she totally has an issue seeing him as a MAN. She is uncomfortable being in the same bed as him because he's a dude and that sort of thing just isn't done, but she has a mental block going where "Jonny is a dude and the hormones still work and he still has everything necessary to do that sort of thing and...hey he's actually a DUDE" is concerned. Like, "I see you as human...wait? You like girls? Whoa! Weird."
So...big brother? Best friend?
Can't decide if I like a little romance in this or I prefer to keep it strictly about Ghostbusting. Then again, there was romance in Ghostbusters...

I think he's intimidated by Jonny because he's a giant robot. Well, mech. And... that's not right. You know? It's more like a "sure, we're pals. That's great. But you're not human, so there's that." Also, uhm. I probably won't make people have their fancy ragamuffin dialects in my addition because I can barely understand them. But you have free reign to go and change all their speech if you want. @_@

You don't need to write them. I am definitely OK with going back and editing it for you if you would prefer. Zeke won't use them himself and he's partnered with Abraham, who won't either, being American. Writing "suh" for "sir" is probably the extent of what you need to do for Abraham. As for Izzy, she's working on her accent...it just devolves when she gets excited or tired. Charlie speaks properly automatically. So that leaves Jonny and the twins. You'll be fine doing whatever you please.

About Abe, his winchester would be a repeater correct?
|
|
|
Post by Quaddy on Dec 4, 2012 12:17:50 GMT -6
Yes. He would have used a single-shot breech loading musket (probably a hunting rifle of some sort) during the war, as repeaters were mostly only available to the Union, but he would have procured a Yellow Boy (an 1866 Winchester repeater) as soon as he had an opportunity to do so. The latest model workable for this period is the 1876, but as he is in England, it is far more likely that he uses an 1873 model (which is, incidentally, the most famous of the Winchester repeaters--"The Gun that Won the West"). It's up to you if he prefers the rifle or the carbine, but most used the carbine as it more portable and allowed them to use the same ammunition for both their rifle and their pistol. As for Abraham, he probably has the thing rigged to take anywhere from a .30-.38 calibre cartridge (up to you) in silver, electrical charges, poplar or ash (for undead), and regular ol' bullets. Just so he can take all of the beasties down.

So zeke is a Dandy now who is in love with Abraham, Izzy is more womanly and sees Jonny as a man so she can't sleep next to her partner. Jonny is of course a halv mechanized man. and Connor is a narcissist obsessed with mirrors even though he can't see like regular people.
Yay!

Post by Quaddy on Dec 5, 2012 1:39:29 GMT -6
Yup. Except that Izzy sees Jonny as a human being, but has an issue seeing him as a man. He is a male human being, thus she cannot possibly sleep in the same bed as him as that would be horribly improper, but she doesn't see him as a man. As in a man who might want to sleep with a woman (or another man...whatever).
Oh, and Brandon thinks the fay are responsible for everything, including bad liquor and hangnails. Don't forget that.

Dunno...Ray was a lot more nerdy than Brandon, who's a bruiser. Brandon is the type to charge into a situation, metal arms flailing. And then he drinks and blames the fay.
And he is definitely the type to say "Yes" when asked if he's a god.

Yeah I know, Quaddy gave me the info on that. I don't see Abe as being gay but he won't mind the attention. As for the gun I'd say he's probably going to use the carbine for easier maintenance and rigging. Maintenance and small upgrades to his gun will likely be one of his most frequent downtime activities as well as sharpening his knife. It will be an extra modified version of the Sheffield Bowie -since England mass produced these around 1850- crafted to fit as a bayonet as well as having a grooved and leather wrapped handle for of handling which must be replaced from time to time if fitted as a bayonet. Also, I'd like Abe to be talented in card tricks.
